Healthcare App Fictional Design

Role: Ui/Ux Researcher, Product Designer

Tools: Figma

Project Type: Mobile App design

Introduction

This project served as my capstone deliverable for my Ui/Ux Design Degree in spring 2023. Growing up around a much older generation, disabled family members and friends I felt there was need for an innovative change in their daily life. This app aims to support geriatric individuals and care takers to promote healthy lifestyles, provide health information, track health data, provide medical advice, and manage patient care.

Understanding Problem Significance | Initial Problem Discovery | Initial Research

In the healthcare industry the inability to successfully treat patients and mitigate health problems have become an alarming issue. The amount of verbal and written information/instructions given to geriatric residents with limited health literacy, too much information regarding inadequate sleep, medication side effects, etc have left patients vulnerable to their healthy lifestyle.

Geriatric individuals typically have complex and challenging health management plans. The more society advances, technology and information develops, older adults and their daily lives become more confusing. Not understanding and taking care of our health has caused a major decline in healthy habits,  medical knowledge, and health resources.

Define the problem

Who is my user | What problem am I solving | Where should I solve it | How should I solve it

Information overload is a serious issue, particularly for patients with limited health literacy Remembering medical advice, instructions, and information their medical provider prepared for them can be overwhelmingly negatively detrimental to their health and survival(Backman, C., (2020)).

Inadequate health resources provided to low income geriatrics heightens greater chances of serious sickness or death. For instance, minimal  knowledge of ways to prevent illness from Covid-19 pandemic affected lower income geriatrics and their vulnerability(CDC, 2021a). This led to eight out of 10 covid-19 deaths In the US and Richmond VA becoming the 2nd highest city in the Country  with covid related deaths(Martz, 2021).

Geriatric people are susceptible to a variety of chronic diseases and the cost of the diagnosis and treatment of patients lead to health failure. As nursing home care decreases and staying at home care increases it is becoming more prevalent to utilize computerized  health applications. It gives the ability to increase social activity, improve patient surveillance, reduce health care cost and prevent diseases. (Shahbazi, 2021)

Problem Statement

“How might I design an application that can help geriatric individuals obtain the resources and tools that they need to navigate their health?”

Reflection

What I learned… This project showed me how to build better personas with extensive research.I learned how to define the problem, understand and empathize with my target audience

If this project continued… If I had more time on this project, I would’ve liked to conduct more, ethnographic research, user survey, and formal testing with my prototype.
